Album Review: Broadway - Gentlemen’s Brawl

After over 2 and half years since 2009’s debut Kingdoms, Broadway is finally back in the spotlight with their sophomore album Gentlemen’s Brawl being released in June 19th, 2012 via Uprising Records.

Gentlemen’s Brawl has been a long time coming, since it’s announcement and constant delays, we’ve been anticipating this release waiting for what it might sound like, what changes have been made it was slowly building to the release date of June 19th 2012.

There are some slight changes to Broadway since Kingdoms, Gentlemen’s Brawl sways in more of a pop-punk/punk-rock style this time around, mostly clean vocals in every song, some screaming parts in the background but not in focus like Kingdoms, Broadway wanted to make a different record from their last less post-hardcore but more rock.

Broadway released 3 prior singles to the release of Gentlemen’s Brawl that being, Vagrant Stories, Lawyered & Faster Faster, these songs were the best way to showcase what they’ve been working on and what they’re new album will sound like. The first single Vagrant Stories is one of the many songs I enjoyed on this record, it had those elements that crossed into Kingdoms territory and gave something new and old giving people a little closure between the 2 albums for example it’s like dipping your toe in the deep end before leaping in straight away.

Another favorite on the album was I’m Not A Rockstar, this felt just like a punk-pop song, it’s lyrics are really trying to make fun of the “Rockstar” persona and how Misha’s lyrics portray them and how they think they are above everyone else, it was fun to hear his interpretation of them.

Party At Sean’s Place was another favorite off GB, a fun song to start off the record, basically them saying we’re back, this is who we are and we’re here to have fun, it shows how much passion they have and how long it’s taken for them to push themselves to get this album out to the public.

This punk/pop/rock style they’ve incorporated into their sound was a major plus, fans were expecting they’re breakdowns and  lots of screaming vocals with clean vocals but with this slight musical change is something new coming from them, even if it’s not new to the scene, I enjoyed Kingdoms and Gentlemen’s Brawl is just an added plus to their career.

Broadway has evolved from their previous release Kingdoms and from all the delays and release dates being pushed back, Gentlemen’s Brawl is still a hell of an album, it’s a fun, catchy, summer album. Kingdoms was an awesome release and so is Gentlemen’s Brawl, it may be seen as generic by others but I don’t hear it, i find something unique with what Broadway brings back to the table, they’re older and more mature and they’re created something they wanted to do and not what fans wanted to them to do, and it works in their favor their creative control has pulled out a great album.
